Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a method of controlled surgical scraping. Treatment softens surface irregularities to give skin a more juvenescent appearance. It is performed to improve the look of facial skin scarred by acne scars, wrinkles and to remove undesired tattoos.

If you are considering a skin repair an initial consultation is necessary. During this consultation one of our specialists will thoroughly examine your skin and advice you about dermabrasion procedure.

Dermabrasion can be performed fairly quickly. Time depends on how large an area of skin is involved. During dermabrasion surgeon scrapes away the outermost layer of skin with an electric operated, fast rotating and water-cooled diamond mill. In case of pronounced wrinkles and acne scars scraping continues until tiny punctual bleedings arise. Normally, dermabrasion is performed under local or general anaesthesia and we recommend doing it inpatient.

As all surgery carries some uncertain risk the most common risk in dermabrasion procedure is a change of skin pigmentation. In individual cases permanent darkening of the skin may occur and some patients find skin feels a little lighter or looks blotchy in appearance following treatment.

There are some reasons why surgeons won't perform treatment: during the active stages of acne, by acute dermatitis and keloids (special type of scars, an overgrowth of tissue at the site of a healed skin injury).

Before treatment you should take a blood test to assure you are not infected with hepatitis or HIV. If you tend towards herpetic infection you should take an herpetic prophylaxis three to four days before and up to seven days after dermabrasion. After consulting with our specialists you should also avoid blood clotting medications up to fourteen days before treatment. Clean your skin carefully and avoid using make-up on the date of dermabrasion.

In the first weeks after treatment it is important to consult your doctor regularly to respond immediately to possible complications. Another real determining factor for healing process is lesion hygiene. Following treatment you will get supporting bandages and the upper skin will be kept wet. If necessary you have to apply unguents containing antibiotics or cortisone for five days.

During healing process your skin will be reddened and swollen first. You'll probably feel some tingling, burning or aching. Pain you feel can be controlled with medications. The swelling will subside in a few days to a week. Later the skin's cells will produce new collagen. Your skin will look more juvenescent and tightly. It is recommendable to use soft-gloved sanitary products in the first weeks after treatment. For about six month you should avoid excessive sun exposure to prevent pigmentary abnormality.
