Hair Loss (Alopecia)Normally the cycle of hair growth lasts for two to eight years. During this time each hair growth approximately one centimeter per day. Following follicles are in a resting phase. About 90 percent of follicles are growing while 10 percent take a rest. After resting-phase growth continues. It is quite normal to shed about 150 hairs daily but some people experience excessive hair loss which can affect men, women and even children. We basically differ between three forms of alopecia: 1. Androgenetic alopecia This type is also called "common baldness" and loss is caused by hypersensitivity against DHT a male hormone. That's why predominantly men are affected. Patients who suffer from this type of alopecia usually have inherited the trait. If loss start at an early age they tend to develop more extensive baldness. Women can also be affected from androgenetic alopecia. In this case hairs thin out over the entire scalp. 2. Alopecia areata Circumscribed baldness is an unusual form of pathologic alopecia. Assumedly patients' immune system identifies follicles as foreign body why they are desquamated. This type of alopecia affects men as well as women and is often seen starting in childhood and adolescence. 3. Diffuse hair loss This type affects the whole scalp. It can be caused by pregnancy, metabolic dysfunctions and deficiencies, chronic infections, different medications etc. It affects men as well as women. The clinical picture is often a diffuse diminution although scalp does not show any alteration. If excessive hair loss persists for several weeks growth can't keep step with. Therefore it is advisable to visit a doctor and if the type of alopecia is diagnosed and neither medication nor avoidance of stress can help stopping hair loss it is advisable to examine if it is possible to perform transplantation surgery.
